environmental design + emerystudio

emery1

I’m not even sure how to define environmental design. I was thrilled when I opened the latest issue of Communication Arts and saw a big article (with lots of gorgeous pictures, of course) of some fantastic environmental design. I’m not talking about environmentally friendly design. I’m talking about the combination of graphic design, interior design, architecture, installation art, and landscape design into THE coolest field out there. Up top, work from emerystudio in Melbourne. Up above is the Seven Yarra marketing suite.

Above, the Australian Racing Museum. Isn’t that 88 great?

Above, temporary street decorations for the City of Melbourne’s 2006/2007 holiday season. The lettering was digitized and cut from sheet metal, fixed to a stainless steel frame, and backlit from below.

40 Bond

40bond

This townhouse and apartment building in New York (40 Bond) was designed by Herzog & de Meuron. The front gates (above) are made from graffiti tags collaged and made into aluminum. From their website:

Jacques Herzog has compared their work to that of artist Andy Warhol: “He used common Pop images to say something new. That is exactly what we are interested in: to use well known forms and materials in a new way so that they become alive again … We love to destroy the clichés of architecture… The strength of our buildings is the immediate, visceral impact they have on a visitor.”
